PMR

PMR stands for Private Mobile radio.

This is a type of mobile and hand held equipment commonly used by taxi firms, security guards, and utility companies. The advantage over cellphones is that once the equipment is paid for, and a radio licence has been allocated from the regulator there are no call costs.

PMR systems are characterised by a limited number of channels with many users listening at a time. This is particually appropriate for group activities where it is beneficial to have an "All Informed" system. It is, however, not the only way these systems can be used and access control systems can be employed so that only authorised individuals can listen to a call.
